Chapter Thirteen

December 5th

9:04 P.M.

“She’s out like a light,” Brick said softly as he tucked a blanket over Skye, who had fallen asleep on his couch.

“She’s been through a lot in a short amount of time,” Arrow said, the medic’s gaze roaming Skye’s slumbering form as though doing a mental examination.

“Yeah, she has, but she’s holding it together so well. For now.” What Brick was afraid of was what would happen once she learned the truth.

“When are you going to tell her?” Bear asked when Brick rejoined his team at the kitchen table.

After being picked up at the airport, Mouse and Surf drove him and Skye back to his apartment. She’d met the rest of his team, and their partners, and they’d had dinner together. Skye had slotted seamlessly into the group like she had been part of them forever, and he liked the sight of her sitting around with the people he loved.

The women had left about two hours ago, Phoebe had to get Lolly into bed, and Mackenzie had to tuck in her baby boy. Surf had decided Lila needed to get off her feet, and Piper had been having bad morning sickness only at night, so she’d bowed out, and while she was mostly healed Julia still got tired easily, so they’d all headed home as well. His team had stayed because they needed to talk through what they’d learned about the man who had attacked Skye at her clinic this morning.

Even though Brick knew the longer he left things the harder it was going to be to break the news to Skye, he wasn’t ready yet.

Wasn’t ready to lose this beautiful thing they were building.

Skye was going to feel majorly betrayed, both by him and her father.

Knowing her father was abusive was different from knowing he had hired not one but two people to kill her. Plus had someone burn down the practice she had worked so hard to build. On top of that, she was going to learn he had suspected her father of being involved in a plot to take over the government and tried to use her to get closer to him to find proof.

If she learned the truth now while she was here in New York, away from her home and her friends, she was going to be all alone with no support system.

He couldn’t do that to her.

“I want to give it a few days, let her get to know you guys and your wives first. She’s going to need people she trusts around her once she learns everything,” Brick said.

“She’s going to know that we knew as well, she won't trust any of us,” Mouse said, waving a hand to indicate the whole team.

“But I'm hoping she’ll trust the girls, she won't think they know anything,” he said.

“But they know enough to know who she is and why we were there,” Arrow reminded him.

It wasn’t like they talked to their partners about all the missions they worked for Prey. But this
